EFT Training & Certification Pathways
FUNDAMENTALS OF EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY (FEFT)
Fundamentals of Emotionally Focused Therapy (FEFT) is a one-day introductory training that provides an overview of Emotionally Focused Therapy and attachment theory across all EFT modalities: individual (EFIT), couple (EFCT), and family (EFFT) therapy.
FEFT is suitable for mental health professionals and students who are new to EFT, as well as those wishing to broaden their understanding of EFT across modalities.
The training introduces the core principles of EFT, including attachment, emotional processing, and the EFT Tango, and illustrates how the EFT framework guides assessment and intervention across different clinical contexts. Participants gain an understanding of EFT as an experiential, attachment-based, and growth-oriented approach to psychotherapy.
There are no prerequisites. FEFT is commonly taken as an introductory course prior to further EFT training.
EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED COUPLE THERAPY (EFCT)
- Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) is an evidence-based approach to couple therapy grounded in attachment science. It helps therapists understand the emotional and relational patterns that contribute to distress between partners and supports couples in creating greater emotional accessibility, responsiveness and secure connection.
- For therapists who wish to pursue certification as an ICEEFT Certified EFCT Therapist, the training pathway includes Fundamentals of EFT, the EFCT Externship, EFCT Core Skills, supervision, followed by the certification process with ICEEFT.
- Fundamentals of EFT is recommended as a foundation for learning EFT. The EFCT Externship must be completed before progressing to EFCT Core Skills.
- Supervision may begin after completion of the EFCT Externship and can continue alongside Core Skills as therapists develop their clinical practice and work towards certification
EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED INDIVIDUAL THERAPY (EFIT)
- Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) is an attachment-based, experiential approach to individual therapy that supports emotional processing and the development of a more secure relationship with self and others. EFIT helps therapists work with emotion, attachment patterns and core relational experiences to support clients in developing greater emotional balance, resilience and connection.
- For therapists who wish to pursue certification as an ICEEFT Certified EFIT Therapist, the pathway includes Fundamentals of EFT, EFIT Essentials, EFIT Consultation (Mastering Skills), an approved EFIT Short Course, and supervision, followed by the certification process with ICEEFT.
- Fundamentals of EFT is recommended as a foundation for learning EFT. EFIT Essentials is strongly recommended before EFIT Consultation (Mastering Skills), as the Consultation builds on therapists’ understanding and application of EFIT in clinical practice. An approved EFIT Short Course may be completed at any stage of the training pathway.
- Supervision may begin after completion of EFIT Essentials and continue alongside other training requirements as therapists develop their clinical practice and work towards certification.
EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED FAMILY THERAPY (EFFT)
- Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) is an attachment-based approach to family therapy that focuses on strengthening emotional bonds and creating greater security within family relationships. It helps therapists understand and work with negative interaction patterns, attachment-related emotions and needs, and caregiving responses that can contribute to distress and disconnection within families.
- For therapists who wish to pursue certification as an ICEEFT Certified EFFT Therapist, the pathway includes Fundamentals of EFT, EFFT Essentials, EFFT Consultation (Mastering Skills), an approved EFFT Short Course, and supervision, followed by the certification process with ICEEFT.
