EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY TRAINING

EFT offers three distinct training paths, uniquely tailored to provide effective therapy for individuals, couples, and families. Each path is specialized to address the specific needs and dynamics of these different relational units, ensuring targeted and impactful therapeutic interventions.

EFT TRAININGS, CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS & PROCESSES

Fundamentals of Emotionally Focused Therapy (FEFT)

Fundamentals of EFT (FEFT):

Fundamentals of Emotionally Focused Therapy (FEFT) is a one-day introductory training that provides an overview of Emotionally Focused Therapy and attachment theory across all EFT modalities: individual (EFIT), couple (EFCT), and family (EFFT) therapy.

FEFT is suitable for mental health professionals and students who are new to EFT, as well as those wishing to broaden their understanding of EFT across modalities.

The training introduces the core principles of EFT, including attachment, emotional processing, and the EFT Tango, and illustrates how the EFT framework guides assessment and intervention across different clinical contexts. Participants gain an understanding of EFT as an experiential, attachment-based, and growth-oriented approach to psychotherapy.

There are no prerequisites. FEFT is commonly taken as an introductory course prior to further EFT training.

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT)

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT)

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) is a research-supported, attachment-based approach to working with couples experiencing relational distress. EFCT focuses on identifying and transforming negative interactional cycles and strengthening emotional bonds.

EFCT helps couples develop secure attachment by deepening emotional responsiveness, accessibility, and engagement within the relationship.

Typical place in the learning journey:
Therapists typically begin with the EFCT Externship, followed by EFCT Core Skills and supervision if pursuing certification.

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT)

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT)

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) is an attachment-based, experiential model for working with individuals. EFIT focuses on emotional processing and the development of secure attachment with self and others.

EFIT adapts the principles of EFT for individual therapy, providing a structured yet flexible framework to help clients work with challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and relational distress.

Typical place in the learning journey:
Therapists usually begin with EFIT Essentials, followed by EFIT Consultation and supervision if pursuing certification.

For EFIT certification pathways, please refer to ICEEFT's website:

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) extends the principles of EFT to family systems, with a focus on attachment, caregiving responses, and emotional bonds within families.

EFFT supports families in stabilising negative interactional patterns, strengthening parent–child relationships, and fostering emotional safety and responsiveness across generations.

Typical place in the learning journey:
Therapists commonly begin with EFFT Essentials, followed by advanced EFFT training and supervision if pursuing certification.
